It is the first question almost every business owner asks us, and it is the question most SEO providers are least willing to answer in writing. How much does SEO cost in Australia? The honest answer is that prices vary widely, but the reasons they vary are easy to understand once you know what you are actually paying for.
This guide explains the typical price ranges you will see in 2026, what drives the cost up or down, what a fair monthly fee should include, and how to tell whether a quote represents good value. We will also show you exactly what we charge at Colourberry, because we think every provider should.
The typical price range for SEO in Australia
Most ongoing SEO in Australia is sold as a monthly retainer. Pricing guides published by Australian agencies this year generally place ongoing SEO somewhere between about $1,500 and $5,000 per month for a small to medium business, with basic local packages advertised from a few hundred dollars and competitive national campaigns running well above $5,000.
That is a wide spread, and it can make comparing quotes feel impossible. The key is to stop comparing the monthly number on its own and start comparing what that number buys. Two quotes of $2,000 can represent completely different amounts of work, and a $600 package can end up far more expensive than a $2,500 one if it delivers nothing.
What actually drives the cost of SEO
Hours of real work. SEO is labour. Research, writing, on page improvements, technical fixes, outreach and reporting all take time. The single biggest factor in price is how many hours a provider actually spends on your business each month, and it is the factor most quotes are vague about.
Content production. Search engines reward websites that answer the questions their customers ask. That means regular, well researched articles, case studies and service pages. Content is where most of the results come from, and it is also where cheaper packages cut corners first.
How competitive your market is. Ranking a Brisbane engineering firm for a specialist capability is a very different job from ranking a national retailer for a consumer product. Niche industrial and B2B markets often have surprisingly little competition online, which means sensible budgets can go a long way.
The state of your website. A slow, poorly structured site needs technical work before content can perform. Some providers charge separately for this. Others, including us, fold it into the monthly work or offer a redesign.
Local or national reach. Local SEO for a single city is usually cheaper than a national campaign, because there are fewer competitors and fewer pages to build.
What a fair monthly SEO fee should include
Whatever you pay, you should be able to see a clear list of what happens each month. At a minimum, a good SEO retainer includes:
Keyword and competitor research focused on the searches your buyers actually make, not vanity terms.
New content every month, written around your real services, projects and customers.
On page optimisation of titles, headings, meta descriptions and internal links across your key pages.
Technical health checks covering site speed, indexing, broken links and mobile performance.
Transparent reporting that shows rankings, traffic and, most importantly, enquiries.
If a quote cannot tell you how many hours are spent on your account or how many pieces of content will be produced, you have no way to judge its value.
Why the cheapest option is rarely the most affordable
Low cost packages are tempting, and for some very small local businesses they can be enough. For most companies, though, a package priced in the low hundreds simply cannot fund the hours needed to research, write and publish content that ranks. The result is often a monthly report and very little change in enquiries.
Affordable SEO is not about the lowest price. It is about the best return for what you spend. A retainer that costs more but produces a steady flow of qualified leads is far more affordable than a cheap one that produces nothing. We wrote more about what to look for in How I Spot Bad SEO Agencies.
What Colourberry charges, and what you get
We believe pricing should be simple, so ours is published. Our affordable SEO services retainer is $2,500 per month plus GST, and it includes:
Monthly search engine optimisation, including research, on page work and new search focused articles.
Monthly inbound marketing, such as case studies, landing pages and lead capture that turns visitors into enquiries.
Monthly outbound marketing, including email campaigns and LinkedIn outreach to your target industries.
12 hours per week, every week, of hands on work on your business.
Live monthly performance reviews, where we walk through the numbers together and agree what to push next.
A free website redesign if desired, at no extra charge, when your current site is holding you back.
There are no contracts unless you would like one. We recommend a three month trial to start, because that is usually long enough to see real movement.
What that investment can return
Numbers matter more than promises, so here are ours. Working with BevTech Engineering and Automation, an FMCG and beverage engineering specialist, we increased website traffic by 405% in the first three months of the retainer. We did it by targeting the services they wanted to grow, reinforcing the areas they were already strong in, adding a plant shutdown checklist that captures leads, and building a recruitment registration form so good candidates are on file before a position opens.
For a Phuket medical clinic, the same approach delivered 686% visitor growth. And in an earlier engagement, an industrial engineering firm doubled its website traffic in four months. None of these results came from tricks. They came from consistent, well targeted work, every week.
How to compare SEO quotes properly
When you have two or three quotes in front of you, ask each provider the same questions:
How many hours per month will you spend on my business?
How many articles or pages will you publish each month, and who writes them?
Can I see live results, rather than a monthly PDF?
What happens if I want to stop? Long lock in contracts protect the provider, not you.
Can you show me a real result for a business like mine?
The provider with the clearest answers is usually the one who will do the clearest work.
